Football fans worldwide face a rare opportunity on Sunday when Barcelona hosts Real Madrid. The fixture, known as El Clasico, will determine which club holds the historical edge in a rivalry that has spanned more than a century. Currently, the two teams are tied at 106 wins each, meaning a victory for either side will break the long-standing deadlock.
The match is scheduled for Sunday in Barcelona. It marks the latest chapter in a competition that began in 1902. While the stakes have always been high, the current parity in all-time wins elevates this specific meeting. A three-point margin will shift the all-time record in favor of the winner, a distinction that has eluded both clubs for over a decade.
The rivalry has featured some of the most recognized names in football history. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo defined much of the modern era, while earlier stars included David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane. Current attention focuses on Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for Barcelona, and Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr for Real Madrid.
Historical context shows how volatile these encounters can be. In a 2017 La Liga match at the Santiago Bernabeu, Barcelona won 3-2. Messi scored his 500th goal for the club in that game, striking in the final minutes to overturn a lead by Real Madrid's James Rodriguez. That victory briefly placed Barcelona at the top of the league table.
Another notable moment occurred in 2007 when a 19-year-old Messi scored a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw at Camp Nou. He rescued a point for Barcelona after they were reduced to 10 men. Real Madrid's Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice, and Sergio Ramos added a third goal, but Messi's late equalizer secured the result.
Real Madrid also recorded a dominant 4-2 home victory in 2005, showcasing their star-studded lineup. That team included Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, and Michael Owen. Although Barcelona won the league that season, the match demonstrated the attacking power of the Real Madrid side assembled under president Florentino Perez.
The most lopsided result in recent memory was a 6-2 Barcelona win at the Bernabeu in May 2009. Thierry Henry scored twice, while Messi, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique also found the net. That season, Barcelona won the league by nine points. In contrast, Real Madrid claimed the 2011 Copa del Rey final in extra time, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the decisive header against Barcelona.
