World number one Elena Rybakina secured her spot in the Ningbo Open final on Friday by defeating sixth seed Diana Shnaider. The match ended 6-3, 7-5 at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre in eastern China. This victory sets up a Sunday showdown against unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez, who advanced by beating Marie Bouzkova with the identical 6-3, 7-5 scoreline.

Rybakina arrives in the final seeking a second consecutive title. Her path to this point was not smooth. She suffered a heavy loss in Beijing earlier this month and withdrew from the Wuhan tournament due to a foot injury. Despite these setbacks, the 27-year-old Australian Open and US Open champion showed flashes of her best form against the 13th-ranked Shnaider.

The first set required effort to close out. Rybakina took control early with aggressive winners from deep in the court but experienced a dip in form. She saved her 11th set point to secure the opening set. Rybakina noted the difficulty of the contest, stating, "It was an important game, and it was a long one," and added that she struggled to close out points despite playing the first balls well.

The second set followed a similar pattern of struggle and resolution. Rybakina continued to battle with first-serve accuracy but won key points to break Shnaider's serve for a 4-3 lead. Shnaider responded by breaking Rybakina to love in the 10th game. Rybakina answered with powerful hitting to re-break in the next game and then served with assurance to finish the match in two sets.

Shnaider's left-handed style presented specific challenges for Rybakina. The world number one admitted that playing against left-handers is difficult because they are less common on the tour. She mentioned that switching patterns during rallies was an issue, though she was happy to win in straight sets. This tactical adjustment will be necessary again on Sunday, as her opponent Fernandez is also left-handed.

Rybakina plans to use the final to sharpen her game before traveling to Tokyo for the Pan Pacific Open next week. Her next major stop is Indian Wells, where she will begin defending her WTA Finals title on November 8. Regarding the prospect of winning back-to-back trophies in Ningbo, Rybakina remained focused on the immediate task. "It's never easy," she said. "I'm going to fight and give my all tomorrow."
