Nicolas Jackson scored twice on Saturday to guide Aston Villa to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Villa Park. The result snapped Manchester City’s unbeaten run in the Premier League this term, marking their first defeat of the campaign. It was a decisive win for Unai Emery’s side, who have now lost to the champions in each of the last four seasons at this venue.
The match began with a swift blow to the visitors. In the sixth minute, a heavy touch by Marc Guehi gifted possession to Jackson. The striker cut inside Elliott Anderson before firing a high shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma to put the hosts ahead early.
Manchester City dominated possession for much of the first half, yet they struggled to convert their control into goals. Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki emerged as a key figure, saving attempts from Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Ndiaye also struck the post, highlighting the visitors' inability to break through the defensive line.
The pressure paid off in the 52nd minute when Erling Haaland powered in a header from a Ndiaye cross. The goal marked Haaland’s 13th in 10 appearances this season. Moments later, Josko Gvardiol came close to leveling the score, but his powerful drive was deflected onto the crossbar by Suzuki.
Aston Villa restored their lead exactly at the one-hour mark. Ibrahim Mbaye was released behind the defensive line and delivered a cross for Jackson. The striker finished low with a shot that should have been saved by Donnarumma, sealing the result despite a late push by City for an equalizer.
The outcome has significant implications for the top of the table. Arsenal have the opportunity to move level with Manchester City on points if they defeat Everton at home later on Saturday. For Villa, the win represents their sixth victory in seven games across all competitions, propelling them into sixth place in the standings.
The performance underscores the stability Emery has built since arriving four years ago, transforming the club into a regular contender in European competition. This success persists despite a significant squad overhaul, as six players who started last season’s Europa League final have since departed during the transfer window.
New arrivals such as Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi are already delivering results, helping the team recover from a slow start to the season. For Manchester City, the defeat occurred while they continue to appeal a guilty verdict on over 100 charges regarding financial rules between 2009 and 2018. The potential sanctions, which could include relegation, showed little impact on the players’ performance, though two defensive errors proved costly against Villa.
