Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is expected to spend the coming weeks in hospital after collapsing on the training pitch on Friday. The club confirmed on Saturday that the 40-year-old is in stable condition while receiving treatment for a virus. Max Eberl, the director of sport, stated that medical examinations are still ongoing to determine the exact nature of the illness.
Eberl emphasized that the club is not setting a strict recovery schedule. "Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We're not starting to put together any timeframes," he told reporters at a news conference on Saturday. He explained that the team must first understand the specific medical issue before discussing a return to duty. Eberl noted that the absence would be measured in weeks rather than days.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks, an English national, will lead the team for Sunday's Bundesliga match at Freiburg. Danks presided over the press conference in Kompany's absence. He reported speaking briefly with the former Belgium captain on Friday. "I explained to him that we wouldn't be having no football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he's OK," Danks said. He added that the coaching staff would work together to maintain the club's operations.
The club did not seek a postponement for the upcoming league fixture. Eberl argued that a strong performance on the pitch would be the most effective way to support the head coach's recovery. "That would probably be one of the best things we could do to help him recover," he said. Bayern's second team match on Friday was postponed following the collapse, but the first team will proceed with the Freiburg trip.
Germany international Joshua Kimmich will also miss the match against Freiburg. Danks confirmed that Kimmich remains on bereavement leave, which began on Tuesday. Kimmich's absence adds to the personnel challenges facing the squad as they travel to the Black Forest.
Kompany returned to the dugout on Wednesday for the home match against Arsenal despite missing the pre-match media session due to his illness. He later admitted to ignoring early warning signs. "I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course, I didn't listen to my body, and then at some point, my body just said, 'Enough is enough!'" the coach said.
The defending champions currently lead the Bundesliga table, sitting one point ahead of Freiburg. Bayern Munich is scheduled to play its next Champions League match on November 3 against Atletico Madrid in Spain.
