Israeli voters cast ballots on Tuesday in a wartime election that resulted in a political deadlock, according to exit polls from major television networks. The outcome leaves neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot with a clear mandate to govern. Two networks gave Eisenkot’s bloc a narrow lead, while Channel 13 reported the two camps tied at 51 seats each.

The Central Elections Committee recorded a turnout of 77.7 percent, the highest level in more than two decades. This figure is approximately seven percentage points higher than the participation rate in the 2022 election. The high engagement reflects the urgency of a vote held against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran.

Neither camp secured the 61 seats required for a majority in the 120-seat Knesset. Far-right religious parties led by Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich are projected to hold a combined 13 seats within Netanyahu’s coalition. Arab parties outside the two main blocs may now hold the balance of power, a role that could prove decisive in forming a government.

Eisenkot, a former military chief and leader of the Yashar party, has largely ruled out forming a coalition with Arab parties. This stance complicates his path to power, even in projections where his bloc finishes ahead. The fragmented nature of the political system means smaller parties will likely serve as kingmakers, as no single party has ever won a outright majority in the Knesset.

Yair Lapid, the opposition leader, declared the result a crushing defeat for Netanyahu’s camp. “Don’t let anyone confuse you: the Netanyahu bloc has suffered a crushing defeat. This is a total collapse and the public has told them to go home,” Lapid said in a statement. Yohanan Plesner, president of the Israel Democracy Institute, described the polls as a major setback for the outgoing coalition, which held 68 seats in the previous Knesset.

At a party rally, Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats party, stated that the nation had given them a sacred duty to fortify democracy and provide true defense for the state. In Nazareth, the headquarters of the Joint List, an alliance of Arab parties, erupted in applause as exit polls were released. Faten Gattas, a Joint List candidate, told supporters that they refuse occupation and racism and will remain present in the political process.

Eisenkot, who lost a son and two nephews in the Gaza war, positioned himself as a centrist with strong security credentials. He joined Netanyahu’s war cabinet after the 2023 Hamas attack but left eight months later to criticize the prime minister’s leadership. Eisenkot opposes Palestinian statehood and argues that the current war strategy failed because Hamas remains in charge of Gaza’s military wing.

Netanyahu, 77, has served as prime minister for nearly 19 of the past 30 years. He entered the election facing corruption charges and criticism over intelligence failures that allowed the October 7, 2023, attacks to occur. His campaign relied on an endorsement from US President Donald Trump and a narrative that he has made Israel safer by targeting the leadership of its regional adversaries.

Final results may take days to arrive as votes are counted. The outcome marks the first election since the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent wars. The political landscape remains fluid, with coalition negotiations set to determine whether Netanyahu continues as caretaker or if a new government forms under Eisenkot’s leadership.
