Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Friday that American mediation has reached a critical juncture regarding the besieged town of Oleshky in Kherson Oblast. He warned that conditions inside the Russian-occupied area have become extremely difficult for residents.

The Ukrainian and Russian general staffs announced that a ceasefire will take effect in a designated sector starting from the night of 27 October. This two-day pause is designed to facilitate a humanitarian operation aimed at restoring access to the town, delivering essential goods, and allowing civilians to exit the combat zone.

Zelenskyy noted in a video address that Russian forces have mined the roads leading to the isolated area. He described the current situation as dire and emphasized that Ukraine is prepared to fulfill its obligations while relying on the US process to succeed.

The White House attributed the truce to First Lady Melania Trump, describing the current conditions in Oleshky as a humanitarian disaster. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia agreed to the ceasefire to permit the mission to proceed.

Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, specified that the actual delivery of food and medicine is scheduled for 29 October. This date falls within the window of the agreed-upon ceasefire.

The arrangement follows weeks of talks between the two sides at various levels. The primary goal is to mitigate the impact of the siege on the civilian population remaining in the temporarily occupied part of the Kherson region.
