The office of First Lady Melania Trump announced on Friday that she has arranged a six day pause in fighting in Oleshky.
The First Lady's office stated that Mrs. Trump acted as the "Exclusive Intermediary" to secure the agreement between Russia and Ukraine. She said she spoke directly with leadership from both nations to define the terms of the localized ceasefire. The arrangement is intended to allow humanitarian aid to reach the city and to prepare a civilian evacuation.
The halt in military action is scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 29. According to the announcement, the primary goal is to help the remaining population, which consists largely of elderly residents. Mrs. Trump described the city as being on the brink of disaster, with residents facing mined roads, limited electricity, and regular attacks. She noted that these individuals urgently need medical care, food, and clean water.
Under the new plan, non military civilian leaders from both countries will visit homes to assess specific needs. Residents who choose to leave will receive coordinated transportation to their selected destination. Mrs. Trump indicated that some civilians may opt to travel to Russia while others head to Ukraine. Newsmax, a conservative media outlet, has agreed to document the work of both the Russian and Ukrainian teams.
Neither the Russian nor Ukrainian governments have publicly commented on the announcement. However, Ukrainian officials indicated that a tentative agreement has been reached regarding the occupied territory. The White House communications director, Steven Cheung, called the development amazing news on social media. He described it as a major positive step towards peace and said history would remember the First Lady's tireless work.
The announcement follows a phone call last week between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin. During that conversation, the pope expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Oleshky. Mrs. Trump has previously worked to reunite 34 children with their families after they were forcibly removed by Russia.
The truce arrives as President Trump's broader efforts to end the war have stalled. He has recently expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting Ukraine should have a new leader. Earlier this week, the president told reporters that Russia has been fine on Ukraine and that they have not been doing much.
