Ten dollars buys admission to a charity softball game in Bradenton, Florida, where the local police force and fire department will compete for a cause.
Gates at LECOM Park open at 6 p.m. Thursday, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The event pits Chief Josh Cramer’s police officers against Chief Tim Geer’s firefighters. Proceeds go to local charities that benefit both groups.
The two departments have a history of playing each other. In recent years, the police played the Sheriff’s Office, but that rival could not participate this year. The chiefs decided to revive the original rivalry on the field.
Cramer described the relationship between the two groups as familial. “Tim and I are like brothers that we always have but never really wanted, you know. That’s sort of how firefighters and police officers get along,” Cramer said. He noted that both groups share the mission of helping the community, though they enjoy competing when the opportunity arises.
Geer expressed confidence in his team’s ability to win. “I’m pretty confident that we stand a good chance to win,” Geer said. He predicted a close match, citing the athletic talent on both sides. He also announced he would bring a dozen donuts to the game, planning a contest to determine the winner.
The raised funds address immediate needs for people affected by emergencies. Geer explained that the money can provide a gift card for lodging and food to a family who has suffered a house fire. It can also assist police officers or firefighters who need support, or other families in the community.
The departments have previously supported organizations like the Haven. This event will channel funds through the Braid and Blue Foundation. Cramer said the foundation was created to cover unmet needs that the police budget cannot handle. It is currently financing a gym for the police department’s new station, a cost not included in the original construction budget. The foundation also supports other community initiatives.
