Woman dies after falling from hotel window in Brazil
Police ruled the death accidental after a window frame gave way, but the victim's boyfriend claimed he had no memory of the incident.

Renata Rebeca Negrão Saldanha dos Santos, 26, fell to her death from the seventh floor of the Hotel Rio Potty in San Luis, Brazil, early this morning. The incident occurred in the Ponta d’Areia neighborhood, a residential area known for its high-end properties. Local authorities confirmed that the woman was alone in the room at the time of the fall.
Saldanha dos Santos was an administration student who had traveled to the city of Maranhão to support her boyfriend, Leonardo Augusto Pinto França, at a poker tournament. The couple had been dating since July. They had planned to return home on November 4, but the tragedy struck at 1:30 a.m., cutting their trip short.
Police delegate George Marques led the investigation and classified the event as an accidental death. According to the official report and security camera footage from the hallway, Saldanha dos Santos leaned against the aluminum window frame. The structure failed to support her weight and detached from the window, causing her to fall through the opening.
The classification drew scrutiny after França provided a statement to investigators. He told police that both he and his partner had been drinking heavily throughout the night. França claimed he lost his memory and could not recall the specific moment the window frame collapsed or how Saldanha dos Santos died. Despite his account, police cleared him as a suspect and closed that line of inquiry.
Saldanha dos Santos’s body was transported to Ananindeua, her childhood home, located more than 500 kilometers from the hotel. Family members and friends gathered in a private cemetery to hold a funeral service. Her mother, Bety Negrão, stated that she felt a sudden sense of dread shortly before receiving the phone call with the news.
Negrão has publicly demanded that justice be served for her daughter. While the initial police report points to a structural failure of the window, the circumstances surrounding the fall, including the boyfriend’s lack of memory and the couple’s alcohol consumption, have fueled public debate about the safety of the hotel infrastructure and the specific details of the night's events.
