Israeli soldiers killed two men near Hebron on Friday morning after the military reported the pair had launched an attack against civilians. The incident triggered an immediate security lockdown across the occupied West Bank, marking the fourth time in the past month that Israel has sealed the territory's borders.

The army stated that troops stopped a terror attack after the two gunmen, who were armed with an M16 rifle and a handgun, opened fire. The military did not specify the intended target. At least five people were wounded in the engagement, with some described as critically injured. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the dead or the injured.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency meeting of the Security Cabinet shortly after the shooting. He claimed Hamas was planning a major attack aimed at killing innocent civilians. Netanyahu praised the troops for thwarting the plot with courage and determination, though he provided few details on the specific nature of the plan.

The closure began immediately on Friday. Security forces were ordered to cordon off Hebron and prepare a full shutdown of the West Bank. This halt to movement comes days before Israeli voters head to the polls on Tuesday to decide whether Netanyahu secures another term or if the country shifts to a new political leadership.

The upcoming election takes place three years after the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which ignited the war in Gaza. The Israeli government has warned that enemies may attempt strikes in the run-up to the vote. Netanyahu had previously suggested Hamas might try to influence the election result through attacks, a claim he made without presenting specific evidence.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a far-right figure, used the incident to argue for stricter limits on Palestinian movement. He stated that the lives of residents, settlers, soldiers, and police in Judea and Samaria are far more important than freedom of movement. He used the biblical Israeli term for the territory in his remarks.

Emergency responders from Magen David Adom said they arrived at the scene near Yehuda Junction while gunfire was still active. Tzuriel Edri, a member of the response team, described the scene as difficult. Reporters noted that two men in their 20s suffered gunshot wounds to their lower limbs, while another victim was unconscious and seriously hurt. Five people were transported to hospitals in Israel.

Following the shootout, Israeli soldiers and intelligence services conducted dozens of operations across the West Bank on Friday. Detainees included individuals linked to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Troops reported seizing weapons, including M16 rifles and submachine guns. An investigation into the initial attack remains ongoing.

The repeated closures have disrupted daily life for Palestinians, who must pass through gates and checkpoints to reach major roads. Israeli drivers, including settlers, can still use roads in the West Bank, though they may face delays. The frequency of these security measures has increased in recent weeks as the election approaches.
