IDF Launches Sweeping Search and Demolition Drive in Hebron After Fatal Ambush

Following the death of two soldiers, Israeli forces are dismantling structures and evacuating neighborhoods to root out Hamas-linked threats in the West Bank.

Israeli forces moved decisively into the Hebron area on Saturday to dismantle illegal constructions and intensify security operations following a deadly ambush that claimed two lives.

The military campaign, which began in the immediate aftermath of Friday's shooting incident, represents a significant escalation in regional counterterrorism efforts. The primary goal is to restore order and remove physical structures that security officials believe harbor tactical advantages for armed groups. This operation is being conducted with high precision to minimize disruption while maximizing security coverage in a complex urban environment.

The sequence of events leading to this moment began with a violent confrontation at Yehuda Junction on Friday. During this engagement, St.-Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem were killed. In response, the military initiated a broad counterterrorism campaign under the command of the Judea Brigade. This effort involves a diverse coalition of units, including the Duvdevan and Maglan special forces, the Paratroopers Brigade, Givati reconnaissance reservists, and Border Police. The Shin Bet security agency provides crucial intelligence guidance to ensure that operations target the correct locations and individuals.

Military teams have conducted extensive sweeps across the region, searching approximately 200 distinct locations. These inspections aimed to rule out the presence of weapons and ongoing terrorist activity. As a result of these searches, authorities arrested ten suspects. The operations are focused heavily on the northern entrance to Hebron, where the demolitions took place. Officials stated that removing these illegally built structures helps eliminate potential cover and ambush points for future attacks.

The focus on the Ja'aba clan is central to this operation. IDF assessments indicate that roughly 2,000 residents in the targeted area belong to this clan, which has strong affiliations with Hamas. Central Command officials identified the two gunmen responsible for Friday's attack as Hamouda and Firas al-Ja'aba. Both men were confirmed to be Hamas affiliates who operated directly from the Ein Dir-Baha neighborhood. This specific identification has helped military planners target their operations with greater accuracy.

Evacuation measures were implemented on Friday evening in the al-Jalda and Ein Dir-Baha neighborhoods. These are densely populated districts in western Hebron located within the Palestinian urban area. The military allowed civilians who wished to leave to exit temporarily through designated checkpoints managed by the Shin Bet and the IDF. This controlled evacuation process is designed to facilitate thorough searches of family homes and immediate surroundings.

Security officials explained that emptying the buildings allows troops to inspect structures for terrorist infrastructure, weapons, ammunition, explosives laboratories, and weapons caches without the risk of endangering civilians. The area is well known to the security establishment as a hub for Hamas operatives in Hebron. By clearing these zones, the military aims to dismantle the operational network that has supported recent attacks.

A situational assessment is scheduled for Saturday to determine if the current operation should be expanded. In the interim, Brig.-Gen. Kobi Heller, commander of the IDF's West Bank Division, has already broadened arrest operations and searches in other key areas. These include Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm, as well as additional locations throughout Samaria. This multi-front approach reflects a strategy to apply pressure across the West Bank simultaneously.

The expanded operations occur amid heightened concerns regarding the intentions of Hamas leadership abroad. Officials are monitoring efforts by the organization to orchestrate terrorist attacks ahead of upcoming elections. The current military response is part of a broader effort to disrupt these plans and reassert security control in strategic areas of the West Bank.
