Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan arrived in Kyiv on Monday, October 26, bringing three cabinet ministers with him to negotiate gas supplies and European Union strategy. The delegation includes Vladimir Bolea, the minister of infrastructure and regional development, Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatîi, and Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu. Their presence signals that energy security and infrastructure are central to the current diplomatic push.
This trip follows a month of intense bilateral engagement. On October 12, Tofan publicly stated that Moldova was considering buying natural gas from Ukraine to meet its domestic needs. He identified gas purchases as a primary topic for his Kyiv visit. Two days later, on October 14, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal met with Tofan to discuss common energy sector challenges, winter preparations, and cooperation development.
The official programme for Tofan's visit includes high-level meetings with Ukrainian leaders. He is scheduled to speak with Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. These sessions are part of a broader working visit outlined by the Moldovan government.
Discussions between the two prime ministers will focus on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding economic and trade cooperation. The agenda also includes regional security and the specific paths both Moldova and Ukraine are taking toward the European Union. Tofan and Koretskyi will jointly attend the Kyiv International Economic Forum, an event dedicated to investment opportunities and economic cooperation.
Moldova's political leadership has also prepared for potential demographic shifts. President Maia Sandu stated that her country is ready to receive another influx of refugees from Ukraine. She said this readiness applies if the severe humanitarian situation in Ukraine causes people to leave their homes.
The visit marks a continuation of the economic and security dialogue that began in mid-October. The specific focus on gas and EU accession timelines distinguishes this trip from previous diplomatic contacts. The delegation remains in Kyiv to execute the announced meeting schedule.
