Residents in eastern Australia face a weekend of heavy rain and severe thunderstorms. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued warnings for South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. These storms will follow a week of extreme rainfall in Queensland.
Senior BoM meteorologist David Crock noted that the wet conditions in Queensland are unusual for October. He said the weather patterns resemble those typical of the peak summer months of January or February. The persistent weather system drew large amounts of moisture into Queensland and northern New South Wales over the past ten days.
The Sunshine Coast hinterlands and Caboolture experienced the worst effects. Seven-day rainfall totals in these areas ranged from 300mm to 400mm, with some locations recording 450mm. This volume of water triggered flash flooding and forced the closure of several schools on Friday.
The heaviest downpour occurred on Thursday. Torrential rain stretched from Caboolture south to the Border Ranges. Some specific locations received well over 200mm of rain during this single event. The State Emergency Service received hundreds of calls for assistance as water levels rose rapidly.
The Queensland fire department conducted more than 16 swift-water rescues. In one instance, crews used a raft to reach an elderly man. He was clinging to the roof of his vehicle in Caboolture. The department reported that these operations were necessary due to the speed at which water accumulated in low-lying areas.
The BoM expects severe thunderstorms and heavy rain to affect central and eastern Queensland on Saturday. Towns including Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg and Roma are on the alert. In Victoria, the storms may reach Melbourne's eastern suburbs. Central and eastern South Australia also face similar risks.
A cold front is scheduled to cross New South Wales on Sunday. This weather system will bring severe thunderstorms to the western part of the state, north-eastern Victoria, Sydney and Brisbane. Crock stated that the threat of thunderstorms will extend across eastern Australia, with a wide area of inland regions likely to experience severe storms. Heavy rain is also expected to develop in Tasmania overnight into Sunday morning.
