Nearly 21 million Americans have cast ballots for the upcoming midterm elections, a total that rose by roughly 2 million in a single day. This surge in early voting coincides with the United States dispatching a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East. The movement of naval assets marks a clear escalation in military posture in the region.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently traveled to Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to a person briefed on war planning, the United States and Israel are preparing for a potential attack on Iran after the November 3 election. President Trump is expected to weigh military options after voters go to the polls to avoid a spike in oil prices during the campaign period.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that his country is ready for both diplomacy and war. Tehran is demanding formal control of the Strait of Hormuz and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the region. Iranian officials have shown no sign of making major concessions despite the increased U.S. military presence.
The University of Florida's Election Lab tracks these early voting figures. While the data show Democrats voting at higher rates than Republicans, analysts caution that early turnout does not necessarily predict final results. Republicans tend to turn out in larger numbers on Election Day itself. Unaffiliated voters are also participating in the early voting process.
In California, a federal judge is restricting pre-election field operations by the Department of Homeland Security. The department claims these efforts aim to identify noncitizens who allegedly voted illegally in nine states. The court order limits the scope of these operations until after the election.
A separate legal battle is unfolding in a defamation case. A federal magistrate judge ruled that President Trump must sit for a deposition in his $10 billion suit against the BBC. The judge stated that Trump must comply with court rules or face sanctions. The case centers on a Panorama broadcast from late October 2024 that allegedly edited his January 6 speech to make it appear he incited a violent siege of Congress.
The BBC apologized for the splicing in the broadcast. The network is seeking to understand Trump's state of mind during the speech. BBC attorneys note that more than 200 defendants in January 6 cases have said the speech motivated them. The network is also seeking details on how Trump has profited since returning to the White House to gauge the extent of any economic damage.
Consumer prices remain a focus for voters. Ground beef reached $6.79 per pound last month, an 85% increase over the past decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Eggs fell to $2.27 per dozen after a record high of $6.23 in March 2025. Butter averaged $3.96 in September, a 17.3% drop from a year earlier due to oversupply. Coffee prices remain 44% higher than two years ago despite the removal of tariffs on the product.
