Six days after a loud noise drew attention to the Alūksne district, the Latvian National Armed Forces announced on Saturday that they had located the wreckage of an unmanned aerial vehicle. The military confirmed the debris was found within the district boundaries.

The aircraft most likely crossed into Latvian airspace on 18 October. The incident first came to light after reports of a sound resembling an explosion. In response, the National Armed Forces and the State Police initiated a search for a crash site. That initial operation ended after two days because available information was insufficient to determine the nature of the event.

An investigation into the specific circumstances of the crash is now underway. Authorities also launched an internal review to assess how the incident unfolded and the factors surrounding it. The military stated that no civilians were injured. Officials reported that civilian infrastructure suffered no damage and identified no further threats.

The discovery follows a similar event in neighboring Lithuania. On the same Sunday, 18 October, wreckage from a suspected drone was found in the village of Juodžionys in the Pasvalys district. Lithuanian authorities indicated the drone entered their airspace from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said the craft contained explosives.

Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesman for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attributed the Lithuanian incident to Russian electronic warfare measures. He noted that Ukraine expressed regret over the event. The timing of the Latvian discovery places it within the same week as the Lithuanian find.
